Anime Summer Season Preview

Over the past year I have been watching more currently-airing anime than I ever have in my life, which is due to sites like Crunchyroll and Hulu simulcasting seemingly everything that premieres in Japan. The Anime summer season is no different and I’ve caught up on a lot of 1st episodes in the last week. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity for a short write-up about the summer season of Anime, one that I am pretty excited about. Keep in mind these aren’t reviews, more like first impressions; so don’t start hating… at least not yet.

Visually Stunning Anime

A whirlwind of a weekend later and Phoenix Comic-con is out of our lives again, at least for a year. 2014’s pop culture convention (that’s really what they should be calling it) was full of great guests and an even bigger vendor hall than last year. Of course the best part was the baloon-animal Optimus Prime. We got to partake in some of our favorite things to do at Phoenix Comic-con while still managing to do number 10: trying new things.

Recap: Phoenix Comicon 2014

OK, has everybody finally recovered from last weekend’s Phoenix Comicon? I’m still having trouble — what a whirlwind! Great, new guests, tons of incredible cosplay, and oh, that huge Exhibitor Hall!

Apparently, attendance was almost 78,000 this year, compared to 2013’s 55,000. And you could tell right away. I mean, Thursday is usually a relaxing evening of badge pickups, Twitter friend reunions, and a bit of wandering around the Exhibitor Hall. You don’t expect a lot of cosplay on day 0, and panels are lucky to fill their seats.

10 Must-Dos for Phoenix Comicon

For me, Phoenix Comicon is the best weekend of the year. As a local, I love seeing downtown, which is usually a ghost town, all of a sudden crawling with superheroes, Time Lords, Browncoats, steampunks, Storm Troopers, and furries. The guy offering rickshaw rides from the parking garage is dressed like Darth Vader, the convention center sound system is playing the Star Trek theme song, and everywhere there are nerds. Old nerds, young nerds, in costume and not, eyes shining, clutching their latest purchases, deep in discussion over all things geek. Ahhh….this must be what heaven looks like…
